Silence is The Key to Awareness

Silence is the key to awareness. In this busy world, we are inundated with facts. Society pays so much attention to everything in this external world, reacting to what we see without realizing we are the cause of it all.  The moment we can sit in silence and truly observe our thoughts and learn how to release them without giving them meaning is the moment freedom settles in.

By understanding that silence is the key to awareness, you can find peace within yourself.  That peace will externalize itself and lend itself to a new world around you.  Silence can also be stillness of mind, even as you are surrounded by chaos. When you learn to react only to those consistent with the life you want to live and the person you want to be, then everything changes.

Stop Reacting

What you react to will manifest itself again and again.  I know this for a fact.  I used to correlate it with the idea mentioned in the bible about being lost in the wilderness.  I felt lost for most of my life, and as though I were in a perpetual state of circling a mountain.  That feeling is gone now because I’ve learned to stop reacting to things I no longer want to experience.  I used to think things happened to me but now understand they happen because of me.

Honestly, words don’t do justice to the value of silence.  How could they?  What lies within us all is invaluable, but we often don’t see it unless we learn to remain still and allow thoughts to flow without attaching meaning to them.  It takes practice, but after a while, there’s a space that opens, and you realize how many unnecessary thoughts have really inundated your mind your whole life.

Meditation

When I first tried to sit still and meditate, it wasn’t easy.  At first, I had to listen to guided meditation because the silence was uncomfortable.  Especially as the flow of thoughts just rolled through my mind like a freight train.  Eventually, I got to a point where I could sit in silence and observe the thoughts, which gradually slowed down.

Now, I can sit in silence, and oftentimes, there are random thoughts, but they come so slowly.  I can even sit down to write and not be inundated with thoughts of tomorrow or yesterday.  There’s just a sense of peace.  It isn’t every day, but the gradual onset over the past 6 months has been a welcome change in my life.   If you don’t meditate or have tried and given up, I would like to encourage you to give it another shot.  Silence really is a beautiful space. Silence is the key to awareness.
